April 18, 2017
Greetings!
Our first Game Day in the Library was a success! Scholars came during lunch on April 7 and played Magic the Gathering, Star Wars Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Monopoly, Life, and other games that they brought from home. Ms. Cotta joined the fun and we gave out cookies to all the students who played games.
Mr. Villanueva's classes are researching endangered animals in the library on Monday and Tuesday. Mr. Villanueva and I created a pathfinder of scholarly, credible sources for them to use for their research, which can be found under "Animals (Endangered) on the library's Virtual Reference Desk.
On Wednesday during periods 1-4, I will teach the bi-monthly parent class on digital literacy. In the past, we have covered topics like creating a Google account, how to send a proper email, how to type, etc. This week we will be looking at Google Docs.
On Thursday Mr. Gersodorff and Ms. James are scheduled to bring their classes in to check out books.
Friday is set aside for our spring book fair set up; the book fair will begin Monday.
Spoilers Book Club will meet Wednesday between 3:30 - 5:30 to discuss the first fifth of their current book, "The Program" by Suzanne Young. This title came from a Donors Choose grant. Each student in the book club gets to keep their book!
The April displays are Spring Holidays (Easter, Passover) and National Library Week! Come by and take a look!
Because the Yallwest Book Festival's Friday date was canceled, they have offered to send TWO young adult authors to speak to our students on Friday, April 28 during periods 5 and 6. I don't know who they will send, but Spoilers Book Club is very excited to meet them! As soon as I hear back from them, I will ask the English teachers if they want to bring their classes, as well. Yallwest has also offered to send Spoilers Book Club a free book and gave them a list to choose from. I am waiting to hear back from the students and will send that list off today.
This semester, Spoilers Book Club went on a field trip to The Huntington and were chosen to attend the Big Read kick-off at City Hall. This year Los Angeles is reading "The Poetry of Emily Dickinson," so the Spoilers each were gifted with a journal and a pen and they wrote poetry inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson and the beauty of The Huntington.
The week prior to spring break students were given their library fines and books owed print out. They have been steadily coming in to pay their fines and return their late books.
The library continues to be a place where students can research, write, print, and check out books throughout the day. Students come during all periods with a library pass. Each teacher has been given passes, and they can also be found in the locked section on our school website. Students can also come before school, during lunch, and after school; the hours are 8:00 am - 3:50 pm.
