We have an exciting week ahead!
Our book fair has begun! Saturday, Ms. Kantor was on campus to welcome 8th-grade parents to orientation and they kicked off the book fair in grand style! As the library was on the campus tour, they all got to peruse the book fair, which will continue until May 12. During this time the library is closed for book check out and computer use--but of course there is a book return box near the front door so students won't be late if they want to turn in their books.
We have four guest speakers planned for the week. On Tuesday, Janet Napolitano, the UC Regents President will speak. Thursday morning, Rick Ernst of Riot Games will talk about game development for career day. Thursday afternoon STEM has a workshop with special guests lined up. Friday during period 6 C. Alexander London is coming to speak to the Spoilers Book Club and Mr. Gersdorff's second-period class. I have asked him if he can stay after school for a few minutes to talk to other students who may want to meet him. I have also called Scholastic to request books of his, and they do! Hopefully, they have them in stock and can send them to us before Friday.
I am continuing to progress with the library inventory. This consists of scanning EVERY SINGLE ITEM in the library. When I finish, we will have an accurate record of what can be checked out and what has disappeared. Once this is complete, I can begin the CDE Library Survey, which is due before school is out.
I have connected our library with social media! I created accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram--see below for info. My goal is a minimum of one Tweet per day on a book related topic to spread literacy awareness.
The Spoilers Book Club is currently reading "The Program," by Suzanne Young and should be 2/5 done by this Wednesday, although the majority of them thought it was so good that they've completed it entirely. They will take a break from their regularly scheduled meeting this Wednesday after school to help out at the ELA / history department parent night. Spoilers will read their own poetry and that of Emily Dickinson (and any other poet) in the library, as well as run the book fair.
